Anyways, let me share with you some dream interpretation that was taught to me from my younger days:
Teeth falling out: Depending on which of your teeth that fall out, it is suppose to indicate that someone close or far will die. Creepy right, for so long I believe in this interpretation, and become very sad when I had such dream, especially if it is my two front teeth. However, I am over this now, I do believe that such a dream is about movement, being more mature, resistance to changes and everything about changes. Example the falling out of our milk teeth, means we will gradually loose our childhood innocence too.
Dreaming of snake: Depending on what color is the snake? Black, bright shiny so on, the meaning varies. Mom told me that if you dream that a snake bites you, this means that someone will come for your hand of marriage. I still remember when I was waiting for my MCE results; it was a very tireless wait, as both my elder sisters had failed in their attempt. So, on the day that the results were announced (the scene is still very clear in my mind), my mom was in the bathroom washing clothes, abah had just returned home from the garden, my siblings were just as anxious as me. So, I got dressed and told my parents that I am leaving; mom just came out of the bathroom and gave me some money. I was puzzled of course on her generosity, but took the money nevertheless. My elder sister was commenting on my dressing, as I was not wearing the baju kurung and she said, are you not scared?
I left for school alone, my mind wondering, my heart telling me that I should not fail my parents and I have to prove to them that daughters are not useless, I don’t know why but I was happy. As I entered the school, my friend came running and hugged me, congrats you made it. Wow, a burden lifted. To my parents, I did it.
When I arrived home, my parents were waiting at the veranda, smiles on their faces which carried on to tears and laughter, yes I made them proud. First daughter to get through the MCE. Then mom came out with her story, she told us all that she knew I will pass the examination, as prior to this she had dreamt that a very shiny snake came to her and was dancing in front of her, without the attempt to harm her at all. So there you go another interpretation.
Water and swimming ashore: Sometimes you dream that you were swimming and trying hard to get to shore or a safe ground. I had this kind of dream many times, especially when I am waiting for an answer or an outcome. If you swim and reach the shore then whatever you are hoping for will come with a positive answer. However, should you drown along the way, then the result will be a negative one. Guess this was implanted in me so much that I would automatically had such a dream whenever I am waiting for an examination result. BTW, this is also the same as climbing a cliff/mountain, escaping a burning area and entering a door.
Dreaming of carrying/cradling a baby: I had these dreams a couple of times and I was curious, so I called up a friend and he happily told that, good things are coming my way. Carrying/cradling a baby is associated with good luck. InsyaAllah.
Dreaming of sad things: There were times that I dream, and wake up crying, or saying my prayers, my husband once told me that I was reciting the azan in my sleep. I really don’t know the meaning of such dreams and I could hardly remember them either. My youngest daughter who often sleeps with me told me that it is kind of scary watching me with such dreams.
I believe that we go to bed every night and take the happiest and worst memory of the day with us. Therefore, we are actually the creator of our own dreams. Our waking minds still thinking while our body is sleeping. Nobody else can create dreams for us.
Could it be right to assume that dreams are a mixture of our biological instincts and personal experiences, plus the numerous cultural assumptions that we are bounded by. Let’s ponder and never be afraid to dream.
While we were driving around looking for parking, we just can’t help noticing that majority of the staff force working at this premises was carrying a pink plastic bag, so much so that we started making fun of them. When we entered the reception area of the Ministry, we were greeted by two women, one attending to us and the other one busy talking about what she wanted to eat for breakfast to a security guard. We were given the pass and off to the Director’s office, his secretary was at her table and I introduced myself. It was exactly 0830 hours, however, like many other appointment, you wait again.
Well, I am not going to talk about my meeting with the Director, but about what the regular lifestyle of government servants there is. First, the very evident similarity in many government offices, be it a Minister’s office or otherwise are colorful cheap plastic flowers, dust infested plastic trees and plant, green slimy fish tanks and top most a small garden with water fountain (this is a must). Imagine and figure that out.
Then, you can’t help noticing the tiny staff cubicles; they will be plastered with pictures, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, husband, wife and kids, and some post its, you will also see plastic flowers again (yes plastic flowers), small baskets, cheap vases etc, then the PC, so you can guess a very small portion of the table and board is being dedicated to working materials. (Point 1 – how much is work).
At 0830 hours, ¾ of the tables are still empty, or if there are, some will be busy talking while eating their breakfast, then they will go to the pantry to wash their spoons, make coffee/tea (chat again) and already making plans what time to meet for morning tea, and finally they will be seen smiling or frowning at their table at about 1000 hours. Hardly warming the chair, they will be ready to leave for morning tea, back from morning tea, browse through some papers then it is lunch, though lunch is from 1300 – 1400 hours, most will leave their table as early as 1230 hours. You can’t help but wonder when do they work? (Point 2 – how much is work). The ritual will repeat for afternoon tea as well.
After lunch some will take time for prayers, the women will have to wash off their make-up, take the ablution then do the prayers, some however will continue chatting after the prayer and some will nap for at least 15 minutes. (Point 3 – how much is work).
While you are sitting and waiting at any government office, just see how these people are dressed. They wear the same baju kurung, kebaya, kurung kedah in bright colors; bling bling head covers (hijab), heavy thick necklaces, chunks of bracelets and bright red lip colors. My husband once commented that, these people looked as though they are produced from a factory line. And whenever an outsider/visitor enter the office dressing different from the norm, their eyes will pop out and they will start whispering, not enough, they will even call the rest of the staff to come and look.
If you go to one of these offices, please be ready to be rejected for any assistance, as the person/staff in charge of the so called department is on leave (be it emergency, medical or annual). They will just tell you, oh sorry, we don’t know, can you please come back when so or so is back at work.
What more can I say but welcome to their world of laziness, corruption and stupidity. Yeah, I will next blog about such idiocy that has gone to the head of even the HOD. Tungguuuuuuuuuuuuu
Within the framework of our everyday lives, we accept that some things are lucky while others may be unlucky; therefore there are creatures, stones, materials that will be created and handed down through generations to be accepted as our belief in superstitions. I enter this entry today, after reading what my daughter was experiencing when along with that moment, she mentioned hearing the crow crowing and wondering what the indication to the whole scenario is. Well, it is important that I want to educate my kids and grandkids not to believe in what I have been taught to believe; only this way will you be able to break the taboo of being superstitious.
Let me share with you some of those superstitious here:
Crows, often feature in mythology as portents of doom , death and bad luck, merely this is because of their dark colors, their unnerving calls, and the things that they feed on. In my younger days, my mom, upon hearing the crows will say, oh someone just died, and apparently not long before a neighbor will come to inform us that so and so had died. Now, looking back and being forced to see crows everywhere, I conclude that that moment was just pure coincidence.
The association of crows with death, I would think so is because a group of crows is called a "murder", and also often we will see that a dying crow will be killed off by another member of the flock. They are scavengers and in one state in India, the crows are encouraged to breed, so that they can scavenge on the dead bodies, as the dead are not buried.
Then there is this myth on Ants: It is believed that ants are good creatures, mom told me that when your house is invaded with ants, this means that there will be more food on the table aka good luck. Well, of course I believe that too, however the logic is that when you leave food unattended for sure the ants will be swarming around right. Now, whenever I see ants in the house, I will spray them with the insecticide.
Myth on Bats: I don’t really know what it is about bats that give me the creeps. All I can think of is that they are often cast in vampire and witch movies/stories, so therefore. We pictured bats turning into witches or vice versa, so it is deemed bad luck. But my kids thought the bats are cute creatures.
Myth on Butterflies: I was told that when you see a butterfly entering your house, this is an indication that a guest is on the way. Well, coincidently, it does occur that way much once in a while. There were times when we were having lunch or dinner, and a butterfly flies in, mom will say ok hurry up and eat, clean the table as someone is coming soon. Looking back at it now, the reason why she told us to hurry up and finish is that we used to sit too long at the table, and at her age once lunch or dinner is done, she was just ready to rest. Because of their beauty, butterflies are happy things and people will not want to harm or kill them.
Myth on Woodpeckers: This is a very interesting one, I was told that when you hear a woodpecker pecking on the tree, this is a sign that someone is dying soon, and the living are getting ready digging his grave or building his coffin. Well, of course for a long time I swore to the truth of this myth, it was made worst when my dispatch rider was killed in a hit and run accident. Prior to that, I heard a woodpecker busy pecking on a tree just outside my window. At that point of time, I was living in a posh condominium area, and it is unusual to see or hear a woodpecker. Then the coincidence took place, the rider was killed a few days later, and of course I associated to the myth. However, a couple of times, especially when you go to the birds’ park or the zoo, you can’t help but see the familiar signal of a woodpecker and nothing takes place, so it is again just a myth.
Myth on Cats: Ancient Egypt worshipped the cats as divine creatures, it was once said that during this time if a cat died the owner of the cat would shave off their eyebrows in mourning. In almost every culture, there is a belief that cats have mystical powers be it good or evil. Black cats are supposedly to be evil; also it is very unlucky to kill a cat, if a cat leaves the house where there is a sick person and does not return, the sick will die. I remember when my young cousin passed away suddenly, and his cat was seen hovering around his dead body a couple of times, some of the old folks said let it be, but some who are more superstitious urged that the cat be kept in a cage, so in the cage the cat goes, until his body was out of the house. I don’t believe in this at all, cats are cats, they are beautiful pets. How do you escape running over a cat when there are too many stray cats on the road? So, if you run over one and kill it, at least have the courtesy to pick up the corpse and not let it be run over again and again.
Myth on Dogs: When I was living with my parents, our house was quite secluded surrounded by large gardens and farms, so we do not see many dogs running around, however, once in a while when we hear a dog howling, mom will say that the dog has just seen a ghost. The howling indicates that the dog is scared, I was scared too. Honestly, till today, I am scared of dogs and have yet to shed away the howling connection. Like cats black dogs are also bad luck. I don’t believe that animals can be bad luck, but dogs unleashed are a real nuisance.
Myth on Fish: I grew up with Chinese friends, my best friend was a Chinese, and somehow I just like to be with them more than my own race. Therefore, it is not surprising that I believe in what they do a lot, I would rather wear a Jade than gold, Feng Shui and fish. They believe that fish were intelligent creatures and contained water spirits. I was told to keep a certain fish in the house, as this fish will help against black magic (ikan puyu, English nya tak tau), and you can only find this fish in swamps, drains and small rivers, the fins are very sharp, and I still do believe in this till today. No particular happenings but it gives me the security to know that while we are sleeping, at least the fish is awake (lame right?).
I love you more every day,
and as time passes I realize how
blessed I am to have you as my husband.
I can see how much you love me when you look at me,
and I can feel that love with your embrace.
The journey of life and the passing of time have made me appreciate the treasure in our love.
Thank you for all you are and for being my husband.
Wishing you a very happy birthday today and many more happy days ahead
God Bless You
Guests started streaming in from 1900 hours onwards; as we walked in we were offered soft drinks while waiting for the function to start. The hall was full of guests, and the launching started exactly at 1935 hours as stated in the invitation card. The opening was officiated with the recital of the holy Quran by Dr. Abdullah Al Mosleh (btw we arrived at the hall together), who read the surah on Ribah.
Well known speakers took to the stage, what was amazing is that each speaker will actually speak in 3 languages, namely Arabic, German and English; this is so that the guests understand. Among the speakers was Dr. Khaled Mathkoor Al Mathkoor, he is a Member of the Sharia Committee of Kuwait Finance House. His speech was flawless and without a written script, though he was speaking in Arabic, I can’t help but note one of the things that he said in his speech; according to him what made many people homeless in the world today now, is because many banks are earning high interest from the home buyers, and due to the poor economic weather now, these people are made homeless as the bank took back their properties, due to failure to comply with the loan, and the property will be left abandoned as not many can also afford to buy properties without loan from the bank. However, Islamic Window now will offer loans to buyers with the assurance that they will not be made homeless in bad times.
The launching was without the normal fanfare of celebration that I have seen before, no door gift, no press kit, no colorful balloons decorating the hall, no stupid smoke machine, no loud ridiculous music, but was smooth sailing and everything on time. Guests were encouraged to fill up a form should they want to be kept informed of the bank’s product.
At exactly 2045 hours, guests were told to enjoy the buffet spread in the Gardens of the University, while we were walking out, the Imam took on the podium and recited the Maghrib azan. It was all on time, no nonsense, no faking it out, and press conference was carried out while guests were having the buffet.
A new experience for me and I admire the slickness on how the function was run. Thumbs, up for Oberbank.
I don’t know if most of you have come across one of the women that has walked across the podium of the UN stage, being hailed as a spokesperson against FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), her name is Waris Dirie (titles: Desert Dawn, Desert Flower, Desert Children), I stumbled on her books when I was living in the Middle East. Initially, I was engrossed with her claims as written; to me she is one courageous person to have endured so much at her young age and to succeed on the walk of fame, first as a model, then as a UN representative.
Oh, let me shed some understanding to the meaning of FGM aka female circumcision (sunat la gitu), this is a social custom, not a religious practice. However, in some Muslim countries where it is practiced, FGM is often justified by a controversial saying attributed to the Prophet Mohammed (Pbuh) that seems to favor sunna circumcision involving minor cutting of the clitoris. The authenticity of these sayings is unconfirmed, and some scholars have refuted them. Even if true, they only permit the practice; they do not mandate it. "According to Sayyid Sabiq, renowned scholar and author of Fiqh-us-Sunnah, all hadiths concerning female circumcision are non-authentic."
However, what amazed me was the truth of her claims in the book, among others was the research fully credible? She claimed that FGM is very much practiced in countries among others MALAYSIA, wait a minute, did I read that right? Malaysia? Gosh, I lived a hugh chunk of my life in Malaysia, and I was shocked to this claimed. Listen, we are not barbaric, I have three daughters and they all went through the ritual of the cultural belief, but they were far from being mutilated ………. Duhhhhh!!!!!!!!
For your kind information Miss Dirie, people in Malaysia are not among the countries that you claimed practicing this. I still remember when mom told me that my first daughter will have to undergo this process, of course, she asked my permission and my daughter was only 3 months old then. Just to put on record, we went to my mom’s state as this is where the experienced midwife live (midwife ok, not any old freak with a rusty knife) so I know that my baby will be in the right hand.
Culturally, this was what took place, the baby was bathed, caressed and serenaded to sleep, then a chicken was caught and the legs of the chicken tied with a small piece of string, the chicken was then placed at the balcony of the house. The midwife, my mom and with my daughter in my arms then decided that the process will take place, I was sitting there watching the whole thing, don’t know exactly what took place, but the baby just gave a little bit of cry and continue sleeping again, there was not a trickle of blood, and everything took place less than 10 minutes. With my daughter back in my arms, they untied the chicken, throw some rice to the chicken and noted how fast the chicken started picking on the rice. This is to symbolized how young or old my daughter’s hand will be claimed for wedding. It was a memorable experience for me and something that I can share with her and my grandchildren (InsyaAllah). However, I know now that FGM is not warranted by religious believe, it is always the norm of culture over ruling the depth of your knowledge into what was brought down to you by generation. If you ask me, will I allow this practice on the next generation to come? Answer…… No.
So, I reiterate here NO MUTILATION OK!!!! ………………………………………………. And I am specifically relating to my experience in Malaysia, so Ms Dirie, get your facts right and to the UN actions speak better than words.

It is funny how you look back and take all these simple things for granted. My kids always have the impression that I am such a drama queen that even if I have a headache, I think I am hemorrhaging, once when I was experiencing some pain in my shoulder blade, I was lamenting that I might have bone cancer, and I actually told the Ortho Doctor at Damansara Specialist of my own diagnostic. He laughed me off, run a zillion tests on me and said, ok, I confirmed that you have no bone cancer, but you were born with some disorder of your back bones, and as you grow older, they are actually pressing more on each other, therefore the pain you are experiencing. I have undergone numerous physiotherapy sessions (sadly it does not help).
Whenever any of my kids or hubby is not well, I will panic, a thousand what ifs start to take place in my over expanded capacity of brain. I will stay awake and watch on them. They are the only precious people in my life and the notorious effects of the negative unknown really stir every strength of my being.
I get to know that my son is not well, and my elder girl is also suffering from recurring pain in her knee, while the second girl has just recovered from some pain in her leg, and I am not anywhere near them. It is tough, I am so hopelessly in love with the kids, and it is absurd. As you know my son is married, thus when my daughter in law is not well, I worried too because she is my daughter now. So, how do you overcome this situation?
Poor hubby will always have to bear with my moaning and lamenting about the kids, while assuring me that they will be alright, so this is the reason why he does not want us to have any more kids. He concluded that I am too devoted to the kids and him; therefore, I cannot have the time of my life.
Whatever……… he got all the emergency contact now, oh yeah it also include the fire department, and as usual he will make fun of everything, so he told me that when you call them you have to talk to them, you cannot do a missed call on the emergency numbers ok. And, he went on with the story of a guy in his country doing a missed call to the fire department when his house was on fire. Ahhhh………….. that’s the charming man of my life.
Moral of this entry, keep all the emergency numbers at reach.
My mind wonders as usual to my angels and my only boy (well sure hope he thinks of me sometimes), what are they doing, are they eating good, are they keeping well, are they having fun, so on and on.
I speak to the girls nearly every day and it is good to know that they are having fun, even though Alia has to travel back to be with her younger sisters, even Amira who has turned into a real gym junkie has to give time caring for the baby sister, and even though Amal is busy with her term examination, yet they managed to chill out together and I am glad.
I want you to know that I am so proud to be your mom, just knowing that you have learned to make decisions on your own. I can’t help laughing when I was told of the incident that they had at TGI (the Curve), where Amira so boldly demanded to see the restaurant Manager, way to go girl. And Alia, thank you for making the pumpkin puree for your sisters, though you had a train to catch in the same evening. Oh, Amal, thank you for updating me on your exams’ results as they come, well don’t worry you have done good but it could be better. Btw you have got a lot to catch up on your Bahasa and Agama darling, but I am confident of you.
Well Boy, just know that I miss you too and I am always worried about you, especially the amount of time you are spending at work. And, I am concern that you are not visiting your sisters at all. Time is short, when you realize it, don’t wait too long to just drop by on them ok.
Here I go again, missing you my babies.
The world is hungry for power, Bush has gone mad, Hillary has become a bigger liar, McCain has gone into deep conspiracy, and Obama is further misunderstood. While in the Middle East, leaders went nuts being the political toys. Yet, Ban is still indecisive; he is too much entangled in the red tape of hypocrisy to realize that the faces of death in Myanmar were human. I swear and I curse, many are like me, but are we helping? No, I don’t think so, swearing and cursing is not the way, neither the demonstration nor the human rights movement. The UN is just another joke, while the European Union is trying to come out a champion. So, where do we go from here?
I don’t have the answer to that question either, can you tell me where has Al Gore and Al Baradei gone with the prize winning money? Global warming is just a myth many would say, and Iraqi children still has no home. These people were recognized by the world on the so called beneficial works that they have done. Nothing changed; the circle is growing bigger, the destruction deeper and the miseries reality.
So, help me God.
